Movie Mondays: “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty” (2012/2013)

By Terence Nance

Looking forward to seeing this one day! If you haven’t seen/heard about this film yet yet, there are a few ways easy ways to get familiar.

1. Watch the trailer above,
2. View a 2012 trailer, and/or
3. Read the synopsis below (from the website):

“You’ve just arrived home after a bad day. You’re broke and lonely, even though you live in the biggest and busiest city in America. You do, however, have one cause for mild optimism: you seem to have captured the attention of an intriguing young lady. You’ve rushed home to clean your apartment before she comes over. In your haste, you see that you’ve missed a call. There’s a voice mail; she tells you that she won’t be seeing you tonight.

With arresting insight, vulnerability, and a delightful sense of humor, Terence Nance’s explosively creative debut feature, AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY, documents the relationship between Terence and a lovely young woman (Namik Minter) as it teeters on the divide between platonic and romantic. Utilizing a tapestry of live action and various styles of animation, Terence explores the fantasies, emotions, and memories that race through his mind during a singular moment in time.”

Trailer: “Despicable Me 2,” July 3, 2013

Starring: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Al Pacino, Russell Brand

Genre: Genuinely funny and heartwarming 3D-animated comedy

I’m so happy “Despicable Me” is back! In this follow-up to the 2010 film, Gru (Carrell) is kidnapped by the Anti-Villain League to help them stop a new evil villain (Pacino). Kristen Wiig moves from voicing orphanage headmaster Miss Hattie to voicing Anti-Villain League agent Lucy Wilde.

Given the use of Eminem’s “Without Me” in the trailer, I’d venture to say the music will be just as cool as the original soundtrack, which was produced by Pharrell.

Movie Mondays: “Peeples,” May 10, 2013

Starring: Kerry Washington, Craig Robinson, David Alan Grier, S. Epatha Merkerson

Genre: “Why am I not good enough for your daughter?”-romantic comedy

Remember when I told y’all Kerry Washington was going to be in a Tyler Perry movie with Craig Robinson? Well, I finally took 20 seconds to find the trailer and here it is.

After a year of dating, Wade (Robinson) is ready to propose to Grace (Washington). The problem? She hasn’t let him meet her wealthy (uptight?) family. So when Grace goes to the Hamptons for the family reunion, Wade surprises her by showing up.

What follows is most likely just like what happens in every romantic comedy of this kind: pops immediately doesn’t like guy, guy continuously does stupid stuff to confirm pops’ ideas of him, then it’s revealed that this “perfect” family isn’t quite so perfect, daughter decides to rebel against family, but just when you think all familial ties are about to be broken, they accept the guy. Throw in some cheap laughs and maybe some tears and it’s good to go.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I’ll probably watch it. And it’ll probably be entertaining. Because sometimes that’s all we’re really looking for, am I right?

Movie Mondays: Oscar Winners 2013

Unfortunately I was unable to catch more than five minutes of the show. (Boo, bad blogger etiquette.) But I’m so incredibly happy for “Life of Pi” (Cinematography, Directing, Music—Original Score, Visual Effects) and Paperman (Animated Short Film).

What wins/losses affected you the most? (I was ready to see Quvenzhané make more history!)

Movie Mondays: “Monsters University,” June 21, 2013

Starring: John Goodman, Billy Crystal | Music by: Randy Newman

Genre: Pixar. (Yes, that’s a genre.)

Twelve years after the debut of “Monsters, Inc.,” Pixar takes us back to when Mike and Sulley first met in college.
